Lorde reflects on ‘painful’ fan response to Solar Power

The singer made the admission while sharing the Summer Solstice-inspired video for her new single, ‘The Path’

Yesterday saw both the summer solstice and the one-year anniversary of Lorde’s third album Solar Power: to celebrate, she released a music video accompanying “The Path”, the first track on the record and one of its highlights.

Co-directed by Lorde and her longtime collaborator Joel Kefali, it’s set on the same beachside location as the video for “Solar Power”, the album’s lead single and title track. It sees Lorde wandering around by the sea, surrounded by a Stone Age-like tribe who eventually burst into a choreographed dance routine.

“On the occasion of the solstice, I wanted to share a sixth video with you, for THE PATH,” she wrote in her newsletter. “This video is the first chapter in the mystical Solar Power story, a prequel to the title video. You see my character joining her friends and family on the island where they’ve chosen to start life anew, arriving in her trademark suit and quickly being transformed by nature’s strange magic. I’m so proud of my buds for learning the dance in this one.”

The highly-anticipated follow-up to 2017’s Melodrama, Solar Power was initially met with mixed reviews from both fans and critics. “I can honestly say [this] has been the year with the highest highs and the lowest lows I think I’ve ever experienced,” she wrote. “It took people a while to get the album – I still get emails every day from people who are just coming around to it now! – and that response was really confounding and at times painful to sit with at first.”
